Can I Have A Go, Please?

He plays with model trains, though
he’ll says it’s me that loves them so.

Soon as he’s home at half past seven
he’s in my room (his “railway heaven”).

Sometimes I get to enjoy a go
before he takes on with, “No, no, no!”

He clicks the signals, mends the rails,
calls it his, “great little tour of Wales”.

Studying homework is difficult, too
with him on the floor going, “Choo, choo, choo!”

I tiptoe out, let him rattle on.
Even I think he’s mad – and I’m his son.

Can I Have a Go, Please is published in THE POETRY STORE,
an anthology compiled by Paul Cookson, Hodder Children’s Books, 2005.
