Philip Burton is Honorary President of Burnley and District Writers’ Circle and is a long-term member of Ribble Valley Stanza and also Clitheroe Writers Group.

Philip Burton’s fifth poetry collection, about the way forward for Fast Fashion, is titledUntagged(Palewell Press,2023), and an enjoyable launch was held at Clitheroe Library on Saturday 12th August, 2023. The Founding Editor of Palewell press, Camilla Reeve, travelled up from London for the event. Andrew Filarowski, the Technical Director of The Association of Dyers and Colourists, came across from Bradford, and the poet Jocelyn Simms was with us on Zoom from France; both had provided written commendations on the cover. Philip’s poem first poem in the collection, titled Long before me, recently received an award in the Welsh poetry competition,2023; the judge was Mick Evans.
Philip will be selling copies of his latest book, throughout the day, and giving readings at intervals, at The Lancashire Archives, Preston, on Saturday 9th September.

Philip Burton’s poetry publications include The Raven’s Diary (joe publish 1998), Couples (Clitheroe Books Press 2008), His Usual Theft, (Indigo Dreams Press 2017) and Gaia Warnings (Palewell Press 2021). Philip’s forthcoming pamphlet is titled Untagged, and will explore ways ahead for the world-wide garment industry drawn from childhood experiences as the son of a prominent dressmaker.

MAJOR AWARDS

In the last few years, Philip Burton has won First prize in the following major poetry competitions: the Sentinel Literary Quarterly August poetry competition 2014, the Teignmouth festival poetry competition 2015, the Barn Owl Trust poetry competition, 2017, the Horwich Writers poetry competition 2018, the Sandwich (Kent) Poet of the Year award, 2018, the National Arts Centre Jack Clemo (interdenominational Christian) poetry competition 2019, and the East Riding Poetry Competition, Festival of Words 2021.
